Illegal Camping

A representative from CoSafe came to our most recent committee meeting to talk about strategies that are being implemented to combat the out-of-hours illegal camping.

As the warmer months progress, illegal camping can become a problem both on the coast and inland. CoSafe have been increasing their patrols and are speaking directly to van owners to identify unauthorised camping. Although you are allowed sleep/rest in your car, sometimes there are blatant abusers who refuse to move, and occasionally the police have had to be called. However, with CoSafe being more visible with their increased patrols there does seem to be a recent drop in numbers.

Homelessness is treated a bit differently. Sand-dune campers are generally homeless, where there are unsanitary conditions and often drug use. CoSafe and Cockburn Rangers give them 24-48 hours to move on. Sometimes land ownership categories often means CoSafe have no jurisdiction. If criminality is involved then the police need to be involved. There is no free camping within City of Cockburn.

The advice given to us was that if campers are not demonstrating bad behaviour then just leave things to CoSafe who are always doing the rounds and determining the intention of van owners. If it feels unsafe call CoSafe on 1300 26 72 33 or Cockburn Rangers during the day on 08 9411 3444.
